Then I remembered that my window has a screen and I don't go about abusing books in the first place, so that was out of the question. The only reason it got one star less was I got so frustrated by what happened near the end that I almost threw a tantrum and chucked the book out the window. But I'm not going to continue furnishing praise over characters. Someone I would have been able to relate to more (which is also probably why I like this character more than I do Lyra Belacqua in Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy). It also helped that Sally Lockhart went from the fantastic 16-year-old to an even more fantastic 22-year-old in the second book. This kind of writing followed through in The Shadow in the North, and it was fabulous to see the repeated cast the second time around. It was such a great way to introduce a slew of characters, and while there were multiple points of views, I appreciated how the reader knew what the villains were thinking. And I don't know when I'll be compelled to read the third installation. Because I can't think of reading this book again. I love this book, but I hate him so much right now. Johnny got his gun book buy7/7/2023 Additionally, with America once again fighting against Communists, this time in Southeast Asia, Trumbo suddenly rediscovered the value of his novel and it returned to print. Once the war ended, the FBI & Congress belatedly turned their attention to the domestic Communist menace and Trumbo ended up being a member of the Hollywood Ten, when he refused to name fellow Party members in a fit of ne found moral virginity. He not only refused them, he also turned their names over to the FBI. Meanwhile, isolationists praised the book and tried getting Trumbo to join their movement. However, as soon as Hitler invaded the Soviet Union, Party members were commanded to advocate immediate American intervention, so with Trumbo's connivance the book disappeared from print. So Trumbo penned this seemingly impassioned anti-war diatribe. After the Stalin-Hitler Nonaggression pact was signed, doctrinaire communists like Trumbo were ordered to oppose US entry into the war the Nazis were suddenly allies of the Communists. The story of Dalton Trumbo & this pacifist classic is as entertaining as anything he ever wrote. There are great myths and small myths, universal myths and local myths, metropolitan and provincial ones. Whiledestroying old mythologies, history is constantly creating new myths topersonify its fundamental ideas. Many ideas and judgements sum up the nineteenth century, butwho can now remember them? What weremember are not so much the words of memorable individuals as the facialexpression, the gestures and intonation that marked their destiny. The face of the waning nineteenthcentury was seen in Friedrich Nietzsche and Vladimir Soloviev, who embodied thequintessence of their times and offered parting words and warnings to thecoming century. What is the end of a century? A calendar date, an historiclandmark, a sum ofaccomplishments, the wisdom of experience? If we agree with Andrei Bely's penetrating pun, namely that "he individual is the face of the century" ( chelovek - chelo veka ), then the end of the century is the image of thepeople who have brought it to its end, who personify this end. Watts7/6/2023 The language is accessible so it's not an impediment for grasping most of the concepts (which doesn't necessarily mean that anyone without an iota of knowledge about Zen will) but the exhaustive analysis might be too much, even with the beautiful poems Watts included to illustrate each idea - a break from this scholarly study.
